About Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in detail - AME

There are many types of Engineering branches and You will also be aware of most branches. BThis course is completely different from others engineering branches.

Everybody know all pilot but few of them know about AME. I have been also an AME's student so I can give you much more information about this course and career opportunity in this field. So you must read complete article.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering i.e. Maintenance of Aircrafts by means of repairing, modification, pre flight checking and others

Aircrafts means any any flying machine which can make balance in air. Aeroplanes, Helicopters, Gliders and Others are examples of Aircrafts.

This is a license based 2 years course and the person who have this license can only certifies Aircraft. Mechanical and Avionics are the two types of streams in this course.

      - - Agenda - -

  1. Aircraft maintenance engineer
  2. Eligibility, Exam, College Selection and fees
  3. Streams and types of License
  4. College life and Module papers
  5. Training and Jobs

1. Aircraft Maintenance engineer (AME) :

Many peoples get confuse between Aeronautical engineer and Aircraft maintenance engineer. Isn't it ?

Aeronautical engineer manufactures the Aircraft and its parts while Aircraft maintenance engineer(AME) do maintenance of Aircrafts

Aircraft maintenance engineer holds a license  which shows only he can certifies an Aircraft.

It means the responsibility of an Aircraft for safely landing is depend on two person - one is Pilot and second is Aircraft maintenance engineer

Before flying of any Aircraft, an inspection takes place by AME in which he checks, all instruments, systems and others are working in good condition or not. If he have any doubt then he can stop the Aircraft until the doubt should be resolved.

And When he confirms that Aircraft and its parts are in good condition then he certifies the Aircraft.

The Salary of an AME is around 2 - 4 lakhs per months in India. It depends on experience of an AME and he also gets 20 free flight tickets in a year to travel any place.

As Aircraft is not a small flying machine, So there are more than three AME for an Aircraft and all have their own works in their license and streams. We will talk later about license and streams.

When it comes to Entrance exam in India, then there is no mandatory exam and counselling for this course but some colleges take admissions through Entrance exam.

And Some Airlines like -Indigo has own college. And if You do this course from their then you'll get a job in Indigo Airlines

But Make sure, you have to take admission in best college in India and that college should must be approved by DGCA (CAR - 147) and EASA. And that College should have at least 2 Aircrafts for practical purpose. The best Colleges fees is around 4 - 9 lakhs for two years course.

3. Streams and license types:

There are mainly two types of Streams in this course -  Mechanical and Avionics. Lets talk about one by one....

Mechanical Stream: This Stream deals with Aircraft's Engine, Propeller , Structures, Workshop and Others.

Avionics Stream: This Stream deals with Instruments systems , Radio Navigation , Radar - communication , Electricity in Aircrafts and Others.

License categories :

An Aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) who belongs to Mechanical stream holds a B1 category license.

  • B1.1 category license for Airlines field's AME
  • B1.4 category license for Helicopter field's AME

An Aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) who belongs to Avionics stream, holds a B2 category license and he may works in all Aircraft types.

Apart from these  A1, A2 and C category license holders are also Aircraft maintenance engineer for particular Aircraft.

4. College life and Module papers:

When it comes to Aircraft maintenance engineering colleges, Some of students leave college soon, without completing the course. Even some Seniors will also demotivate you in college.

And these are those students who think my salary would be 2 - 4 lakhs after 2 years course and 1 year training. But when they get to know about reality , responsibility of AME and struggle behind this course then they decide to leave the college.

Yes , It is true about salary , but for that you have to clear your all Module papers and holding a license and gain experiences.

Now, What is module papers?

In Aircraft maintenance engineering course,  there is no importance of semester exam in India.

Module papers (Subjects) is most important exam which is conducted by DGCA in every 3 months for holding a AME license in India. Similarly EASA also conduct module papers exam for get license and works in other countries.

And in college you will study according to module papers. In college, half of day for theory classes and other half of day for practical classes.

In Mechanical stream there are 13 modules and in Avionics stream there are 11 modules, are mandatory to become an AME and holding a AME license

5. Training and Jobs :

After completing the 2 years course you have to go for Apprenticeship or training purpose.

You can complete your training from Airlines or MRO (Maintenance and Repair Organization). In this training period you will learn many things from your Seniors engineers.

Jobs :

Any person can not become an AME after clearing all module papers you have to grow and gain experience step by steps. Let me understand you.

After completing your Training period you will  become a Junior engineer after 1 year you will promote for Technician after next 1 year you will promote for Senior Technician then lastly you will become an AME. And the salary of all types of jobs would be different.

It takes at least 5 years after completing the course, to become an AME who can certifies the Aircraft.

My view and points :

I hope you have been understand all things about this course. As I said, I have been also an AME's student so when I heard about this course then I didn't have much information about this course even I also didn't know about DGCA but within one month of college I had known all about this course.

So I'd say , This is the best professional course for those students who want to make career in Airlines field. So after reading this article and having interest in this field then you should do this course.

But always remember one thing, It doesn't matter how your college is ? Just complete your course and clear your module papers and focus on your college's study and practical.
